Duisburg

Duisburg, a German city in the western part of the Ruhr Area (Ruhrgebiet) in North Rhine-Westphalia, is an independent metropolitan borough within Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf. It is located in the Lowland Rhine area at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers and near the outskirts of the Bergisches Land. The city spreads along both sides of these rivers. With the world's biggest inland harbour and its proximity to Düsseldorf International Airport, Duisburg has become an important venue for commerce and steel production. Today's city is the twelfth-largest city in Germany and the fifth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia with close to 500,000 residents in an area of 232 sq km. The steel industry is the backbone of the city. Duisburg, built in 883 CE, celebrated its 1100th anniversary in 1983.

How to Get There:
Düsseldorf Airport is 17 km while Essen-Mühlheim is 13 km from the city centre, with easy access from either airport. Main railway stations are Duisburg Central Station,
Train Station Oberhausen and Essen Central Station. Duisburg is connected to the German Autobahn system by five such roads through its periphery.

What to See:
Interesting architecture and structures in this city include: the bridge that bonds the neighborhoods Duissern and Meiderich, is proof of German labor discipline and precise planning. Then, the Alte Post, a representative structure of yellow brick and red sandstone, this is the old post office, situated near the Town Hall. Third is the Dreigiebelhaus, the oldest surviving building in Duisburg ( 1536). The picturesque mills of Duisburg, eight in total, 6 of which are historical and made of red bricks. Another thing to see is the Wedau Water World, as well as the Zoo, a great spot for animal lovers. Duisburg also offers the opportunity to visit the biggest inland port on the globe. Experience the Inner Harbor from one of the various taverns, cafes or bars, or tour it by boat on a harbor cruise.

There are 260 odd restaurants in Duisburg, and Webster-Brauhaus,Walsumer Hof, Duisburgs Lindenwirtin,Steinbruch, Kartoffel-Kiste and Abteikeller are recommended.

Events:
Loveparade, Steinbruch,Walsumer Brauhaus Urfels,Parkhaus Jugendkultur, Weinfest III Späterlese and Weinfest are its annual cultural events.
