Furth

Germany tours

The city of Fürth located in northern Bavaria, Germany, lies in the administrative region of Middle Franconia. It is more or less contiguous with the larger city of Nuremberg, the centres of the two cities being only 7 km apart. Fürth, Nuremberg and Erlangen, together with some smaller towns, form the "Middle Franconian Conurbation", which is one of 23 "major centres" in Bavaria and one of the 11 German metropolitan regions. Fürth celebrated its thousandth anniversary in 2007. The centre of the town is to the east and south of the rivers Rednitz and Pegnitz, which converge to form the main Regnitz, northwest of the Old Town. To the west, on the far side of the Main-Danube Canal, is the Fürth municipal forest. To the east of Fürth lies Nuremberg, and to the north is the fertile market-gardening area known as the Knoblauchsland (garlic country). It has a population of 115,000 on an area of 65 sq km.

How to Get There:
Furth does not have an airport, but Nuremberg has, mostly for regional flights, budget airlines and charter holidays. If you are flying in from any major airport outside of Germany, then you'll have to fly in via Frankfurt. The principle budget airline for Nuremberg is Air Berlin, and they do good value flights to all over Germany, Europe, as well as to countries like Turkey and Egypt. Condor, Lufthansa's budget wing, is also seen frequently. Apart from Lufthansa a small number of major national airlines fly to the city, including KLM, Air France and Turkish Airlines. Transport to and from the airport is superb on the U2 underground line. The 12 minutes trip to/from the city centre hardly costs anything.

What to See:
In the old town, around the Church of St. Michael, you can see buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Of particular note is the Hornschuch Promenade with the Gründerzeit and Jugendstil apartment houses. The Jewish Museum in Franconia is worth a visit.

Furth went green early and the "Nature Trail for Urban Ecology" was established in 1999 (3 km, 10 stops) and expanded in 2003 to include a second route (7 km, 10 stops). The Stadthalle underground railway station is the starting point for both tours. The Gustav-Adolph natural spring, near Weikershof, by the River Rednitz, was used for a swimming pool until the 1980s , with the spring water, which comes out of the ground at 19°C, providing pleasant relief. It is now a regulated pool.

Where to Eat:
Furth has 72 restaurants, with another 224 bars. Mike's EKU Steakhouse, Obstgartla, Keops , Alexander der Grosse, Gluckspilz, Zum Baren, Schutzenhof and Zum Schorsch are recommended.

Events:
Regulat events are the Burgfarrnbach fair (Bürgerfest) in May, the Fürth and Hardhöhe Festivals in Summer and the Michaeliskirchweih fair. One of the largest such events in Bavaria, and also the largest and most important festivals in Fürth, it has been going on for more than
800 years, held in September every year.

Hotels:
For a small city with just 16 hotels and four B&Bs / Inns, Furth is on the pricey side, with prices exceeding €300. Cheaper hotels are also available, below €100. Fuerther Hotel, Mercure Nuernberg West, NH Forsthaus Fuerth-Nuernberg, Ambient Hotel am Europakanal, Quality Hotel Bavaria, Hotel Am Forum, Pyramide Hotel and the Hotel PrimaVera parco are recommended.
