Ludwigshafen

Germany tours

Ludwigshafen, a small city directly across from Mannheim (Baden-Württemberg), is on the eastern edge of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and the second largest city in the state. It lies on the Rhine and has about 167,000 inhabitants on an area of 78 sq km. It forms the Rhine Neckar Area, with Mannheim, Heidelberg and their surrounds.

How to Get There:
The nearest major airport to Ludwigshafen is Frankfurt at 72 km. Frankfurt provides access to Mannheim by road. Mannheim Airport has regional flights to Berlin, Hamburg, Westerland, Saarbrucken, Westerland and Heringsdorf. Ludwigshafen railway station is connected by regional trains. Mannheim is better connected and most people use the latter. Ludwigshafen is, however, well connected by road, with the A61 and A65 motorways linking its A 650 highway. The Rhine can also be used as access. Public transport is by tram, bus and light railway.

What to See:
Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption, Maudacher Castle, the Berliner Platz, Wilhelm-Hack Museum and various parks. The city centre of Ludwigshafen is comparatively small and dominated by post-war buildings. The Hochstraßen (highways on stilts) form its northern and southern boundaries, the Rhine to the East and the main station in the West of downtown Ludwigshafen. The Gartenstadt, west of Mundenheim, is a very green suburb. Its sub-districts are Niederfeld, Hochfeld and Ernst-Reuter-Siedlung. Ludwigshafen is considered to be the primary German harbour west of the Rhine. The local chemical industry depends on shipping their raw materials and products on transportation by river.

Where to Eat:
Ludwigshafen has 206 restaurants, of which the Peach, Bistro ABACO, Achilles Grill, Agram, Algarve, Alle Neune and the Alt-Frisenem are rated highly.

Hotels:
There are very few hotels in Ludwigshafen and it is advisable to stay elsewhere and get into the city every morning. Of the few, the decent ones are Best Western Hotel Ludwigshafen, Hotel Viktoria, Ebert Park, Europa Hotel Ludwigshafen and the Business Hotel Rene Bohn.
