Nuremberg

Germany tours

Nuremberg, a city in the German state of Bavaria in the administrative region of Middle Franconia, is Bavaria's second largest city after Munich. Situated on the Pegnitz river and the Main-Danube Canal, it is located about 105 miles north of Munich. It has a population just in excess of 500,000 residents, settled on an area of 186 sq km.

How to Get There:
Nuremberg has an Airport, with flights to major German cities and many European destinations, as well as connecting flights worldwide, for example via Frankfurt or Vienna. It is used mainly by Air Berlin in winter. The city's location next to numerous highways, railways, and a waterway has contributed to its strategic importance for cross-EU travel, particularly eastwards. It is also the junction of four important Autobahn routes.

Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof is a stop for IC and ICE trains on the German long-distance railway network. The Nuremberg–Ingolstadt–Munich High-Speed line with 300 km/h operation opened end 2006, and is fully integrated into the rail schedule. Travel times to Munich have been cut down to as little as 60 minutes. Nuremberg is also an important port on the Main-Danube Canal. Over 500 cruise ships stop in Nuremberg port every year. City and regional transport: The Nuremberg U-Bahn metro system opened in 1972. The system, along with trams and buses, provides local travel facilities. There is also an S-Bahn suburban metro railway and a regional train network.

What to See:
Any visitor who spends at least one night in Nuremberg, Fuerth, Erlangen or Schwabach may purchase the "Nürnberg Card", which provides admission to 49 museums and similar attractions gratis and also free travel on public transportation in Nuremberg and Fuerth. You also get 10 to 20 percent discounts on purchases in many shops, seven theaters, from children's theater to cabaret to travesty revues and cinema houses. Do see Nuremberg Castles, the City Walls, St Sebald Church (Sebalduskirche), St Lawrence Church (Lorenzkirche), Nurembergs Underworld (Nürnberger Felsengänge) and Nuremberg Exhibition Centre (Nürnberg Messezentrum) and about a dozen museums.
