Recklinghausen

Germany tours

Recklinghausen is the northernmost city in the Ruhr-Area and the capital of the Recklinghausen district. It borders the rural Münsterland and is characterised by large fields and farms in the north and industry in the south. It has a population of 123,000 residents in an area of 66 sq km.

How to Get There:
The nearest major airport to Recklinghausen is Dusseldorf International, Germany which is 48 km from the centre of Recklinghausen. The city is well connected by road, with two autobahns crossing its outskirts. The Rhein-Herne-Kanal links the small city and port to the larger central German waterways. Recklinghausen has two railway stations, Recklinghausen Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) which is connected to the national and European high speed (Intercity) and the South Station (Recklinghausen Südbahnhof), with regional connections.

What to See:
Recklinghausen is home to a museum of icons- the largest outside the Orthodox world - which includes more than 1,000 Orthodox works from Russia, Greece and the Balkan countries, as well as early Coptic Christian art from Egypt. The icon museum was founded in 1956 and reopened after renovation in February 2006 for its 50th anniversary. The Ruhrfestspiele, a cultural fest held every year is held in Recklinghausen. The festival has an envious reputation, with international celebrities taking part. Labour Day, 1 May, signals the launch of another series of cultural events, with both national and international participation. These events are held in the city’s foremost venue, the Ruhrfestspielhaus. Since the number of productions is quite large, the other theatres in the vicinity are invited to host some. At the Lohtor, you can see the memorial to the victims of World War 1.

Where to Eat:
Recklinghausen has over 50 restaurants and some of the better known names are Die Treppe, Akdeniz Grill, Acht-Acht, Am Dreieck and the Auerbachs Keller.

Hotels:
TOP Hotel Am Festspielhaus Recklinghausen, Best Western Parkhotel Engelsburg and Landhaus Scherrer are top-end hotels, with the Hotel Wueller and the Sporthotel Quellberg-Park
in the mid-price segment.
