Remscheid

Germany tours

Remscheid is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located on the northern edge of the region, on the southern side of the Ruhr area. It lies along the Wupper River, south of Wuppertal, in the heart of the Bergisches Land, a hilly, wooded district in the lower Rhine River valley. Machinery, electronics, and chemical industry complexes are located in Remscheid, which has, over the years, specialised in tool manufacture. After Wuppertal and Solingen, it is the third largest municipality in Bergisches Land.

How to Get There:
Remscheid airport is situated within driving distance of the main city. The Remscheid airport links to destinations all over the world, handling millions of passengers every year. The airport is accessible via the main roads around Remscheid. The nearest international airport is Cologne-Bonn some 40 km away, while Dusseldorf is about 50 km away. It lies on both motorways and regional main roads. It is well connected by rail as well, with links to all major cities in Germany.

What to See:
The Müngstener Brücke, the highest railroad bridge in Germany, is a railroad bridge crossing a valley connecting Remscheid with the neighbouring town of Solingen. At 107 m above ground, it was constructed in 1897 and originally named the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke after Wilhelm I (whose 100th birthday would have been in 1897). The Eschbachtalsperre, the first dam built(1891) for provision of potable water in Germany is situated here. The Town Hall of Remscheid and the old city of the borough Lennep, which consists of 116 houses from 1756 are worth a visit. The Heimatmuseum has a collection of furniture and furnishings, mainly Baroque, Empire and Biedermeier, and a Pewter Cabinet. The German Tool Museum illustrates the development of tools from the Stone Age to the present day, with old workshops, iron-smelting equipment, etc., and maintains a number of old ironworks on an "industrial trail" in the Gelpe valley. The Röntgen Museum in the Lennep district of Remscheid, displays apparatus that belonged to the discoverer of X-rays, W. C. Röntgen, a native of Remscheid, as well as modern X-ray apparatus, and illustrates applications of X-rays in archaeology, materials technology, etc.

Where to Eat:
Remscheid has over 60 restaurants to suit your taste and budget. Prominent restaurants are: the Altstadt Grill, Bahnhofsgaststatte, Becker Richard, Futterkrippe, Grillstube and the Kupferkanne.

Hotels:
Remscheid has only ten hotels and one B&B. One hotel, the Atrium Rheinhotel is of the 4-star variety. Some of the others are the Hotel-Restaurant Kromberg, Hotel Berliner Hof, Hotel Noll, Ascot Hotel and Hotel Abalone, all in the mid-range class.
